Should I Use Teflon Pipe Tape For Plumbing Leaks?

Teflon (PTFE) tape is best for sealing threaded pipe joints, but it will not fix leaks from cracked pipes, valve bodies, or glued/soldered connections. Most drip-by-drip leaks on threaded fittings come from worn threads or insufficient seal on the male threads; fresh tape, properly applied, can stop minor seepage, but active or recurring leaks usually mean the fitting or section needs repair or replacement. Avoid using tape on compression, flare, push-to-connect, PEX crimp, press, slip-joint traps, or PVC/CPVC that’s glued—those rely on ferrules, O-rings, or solvent welds, not tape. If the fitting is cross-threaded, corroded, or the pipe is split, tape only delays a needed repair. Our plumbers often find overtightened fittings on local service calls in the Gibson City area that no amount of tape can seal. For spraying water or a fast-growing leak, shut off the main valve and call a licensed plumber promptly.
