Where should HVAC UV light be installed near the evaporator coil?

An HVAC UV light should be installed so it shines directly on the evaporator coil and the drain pan, typically mounted in the supply plenum just downstream of the coil. This spot targets the moist surfaces where biofilm tends to grow and reduces buildup before it reaches your airflow. Keep the lamp inside the cabinet, not the living space, with a clear line of sight to the coil face for consistent exposure. Aiming across the wettest part of the coil face often matters more than raw lamp wattage. Lanz Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, Inc. installs coil-irradiation UV solutions in the local area, including homes around Tilton.

For clean, safe placement, your installer will usually:

  • Mount the lamp so it directly “sees” the coil and pan, not just the air stream.
  • Avoid shining on plastics, wiring, or flex duct; add shields if needed.
  • Leave service clearance and a view port for safe checks and lamp changes.
  • Follow product specs (ozone-free lamps) and interlock power for safe access.

Have a licensed HVAC professional place and power the lamp, then verify there are no UV leaks before closing the cabinet.
