Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling Properly?

An AC that runs but isn’t cooling usually has restricted airflow, incorrect settings, low refrigerant, or a failing part in the outdoor or indoor unit. The most common cause is a clogged air filter or dirty coil that blocks airflow and heat transfer. A thermostat set to Fan or an oversized system that short-cycles can also leave rooms warm. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor fan is still, we often find a failed start capacitor. Our team sees these patterns in many homes around Catlin during the first hot stretch of the season. Emergency help is available 24/7 with no extra after-hours fee.

Try these quick checks before you call:

  • Replace a dirty filter and open closed supply vents.
  • Set the thermostat to Cool, Fan Auto, and lower the setpoint.
  • Clear debris from the outdoor unit and gently rinse the coil.
  • Look for ice on refrigerant lines or a tripped breaker.

If you see icing or smell burning, turn the system off and schedule a professional diagnostic.
