Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling The House?

An AC that runs but doesn’t cool usually has an airflow blockage, low refrigerant, thermostat or control issues, or a dirty or frozen coil. The most common cause is a clogged air filter or a blocked outdoor condenser that chokes off airflow.

Our technicians see this often and can quickly diagnose whether it’s a filter, refrigerant leak, coil problem, electrical part, drainage issue, or even a system sizing/airflow mismatch. We handle these calls daily in the Elliott area and follow a clear test-and-verify repair process before we clean up the work area.

Try these quick checks before you call:

  • Set the thermostat to Cool and Fan to Auto, then lower the setpoint.
  • Replace a dirty air filter and clear debris from the outdoor unit.
  • Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked.
  • If a breaker has tripped, reset once; if it trips again, stop and call.

If you see ice on the lines or the unit runs nonstop without cooling, turn it off to prevent damage and schedule service.
