What Should My AC Be Set At When It's 100 Degrees Outside?

The best AC setpoint when it’s 100°F outside is about 75–78°F, roughly a 20°F drop from outdoors, which aligns with how most systems are designed to perform. Most comfort loss on triple-digit days comes from long runtimes and heat gain, not a “too-high” thermostat, and cranking it lower won’t cool faster.

Start cooling early, keep blinds closed, and run ceiling fans to make 78°F feel cooler; technicians often call this “stacking efficiency” before the day peaks. Our team sees during heat waves in the Cerro Gordo area that systems pushed into the low 60s can ice the coil and actually lose capacity.

For extreme heat, use these settings and checks:

• Hold 78°F by mid-morning; nudge to 75–76°F only if the home maintains it.
• Limit setbacks to 3–4°F; big swings overwhelm the system.
• Keep the fan on Auto for better humidity control; use ceiling fans for comfort.
• If supply air isn’t about 15–20°F cooler than room air, check a dirty filter or icing.

If the home climbs above 80°F or you see frost on the refrigerant line, turn cooling off, set the fan to On for 30 minutes, and schedule service.
