Why Is My HVAC Not Heating Even Though It Turns On?

An HVAC system that turns on but doesn’t heat usually points to a control or heat-making problem, like incorrect thermostat settings, a failed igniter or flame sensor, restricted airflow, or a safety lockout that lets the blower run without heat. The most common cause we find is a dirty filter or blocked return starving the furnace for air, which can trigger limit switches and shut the burners off. A tech will also check gas supply, ignition, sensors, and for heat pump systems, defrost and refrigerant charge. One telltale clue is a furnace that lights, heats briefly, then blows cool air—that often means the flame drops out due to a weak sensor.

We service homes throughout the Hammond, IL area and can handle quick diagnostics and repairs, including 24/7 emergency no-heat service.

Before you call, try these quick checks:

  • Set thermostat to Heat and raise the setpoint 5°F.
  • Replace a clogged filter and clear returns.
  • Confirm the furnace switch and breaker are on.
  • For heat pumps, clear ice/debris from the outdoor unit.

If you smell gas or the breaker trips repeatedly, turn the system off and call a professional immediately.
