Why Is My HVAC Heater Not Turning On At All?

An HVAC heater that won’t turn on usually points to a power supply issue, thermostat problem, safety lockout, or an ignition failure. The most common cause is a thermostat not calling for heat or a tripped breaker or switch cutting power. Some systems pause to protect themselves after faults, and many control boards lock out after a brief power blink until fully reset. Our EPA-certified technicians handle these faults routinely for homeowners throughout the Armstrong area.

Try these quick checks:

  • Set thermostat to Heat, raise 3–5°, and replace the thermostat batteries.
  • Verify the breaker is ON and the nearby furnace switch is ON.
  • Install a clean filter and fully seat the furnace’s front panel.
  • Empty the condensate pan or lower a tripped float switch if present.

If you smell gas, hear repeated clicking without ignition, or the home is below safe temps, power the unit off and call a professional.
