Which way should a water filter be installed?
A water filter should be installed with the flow arrow on the housing pointing in the same direction as your home’s water flow. Most problems happen when the inlet and outlet get reversed, which can restrict pressure and reduce filtration performance. Use the cold-water line for drinking-water filters, and tighten fittings evenly to avoid leaks. Our licensed plumbers install and maintain whole-home filters, softeners, and RO systems across the Champaign–Urbana area.
- Match the IN/OUT ports and arrow to the flow from the main shutoff toward your fixtures.
- Keep canister-style filters vertical with the sump down for easy service and proper air purge.
- Set whole-home filters after the main shutoff and before branch lines to treat the entire house.
- For RO and faucet filters, connect to the cold line and fully flush per the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you’re unsure of flow direction, stop and have a licensed plumber verify before you turn the water back on.
